TPD is seeking an enthusiastic candidate with a desire to become a Certified Bridge Safety Inspector. The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, a desire to learn, the willingness to work cohesively within a team and the ability to work on multiple concurrent projects.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the planning and preparation for bridge inspections by collecting existing bridge reports and data, gathering equipment, coordinating inspection routes, etc.

  • Review and interpret plans and site layouts to obtain information about the bridges.

  • Assist in the inspection of bridge superstructures, substructures, approach roadways, safety features (guide rail), stream channels, and signing as required for structural integrity, general safety, continued conformance to specifications and codes, and compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards and FHWA bridge inspection metrics.

  • Assigning Condition and Appraisal ratings to the various components of bridges in accordance with agency guidelines.

  • Collection of bridge inspection data and entry into PennDOT’s Bridge Management System using PennDOT’s electronic iForms and BMS2web systems.

  • Use of inspection equipment, including but not limited to: safety harnesses, measuring devices, tape measures, calipers, ladders, cameras, probing rods, hammers, wire brushes, and other small tools.

  • Use of special access equipment to access all portions of the bridge structure (e.g. underbridge cranes, lift vehicles, amphibious tracking lift vehicles, boats, rigging platforms)

  • Writing of draft reports for review by Inspection Team Leaders.

  • Assist in the preparation of recommendations, including quantities and costs for repairs to bridges for review by the Inspection Team Leader.

Job Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with some exposure to structural engineering (such as undergraduate coursework) is desirable, but not required.

  • Willingness to complete a 3 week training course, and pass the test to become a Certified Bridge Safety Inspector (CBSI), followed by attendance at 3-day refresher courses every two years, and attendance at additional supplemental training following certification.

  • A willingness and ability to work both indoors and outdoors during all types of weather and year round. Inspections may be performed day or night, with work periods longer than 8 hours.

  • The ability to navigate in and around bridge structures, which may require traversing rugged terrain with thick vegetation, working at heights, climbing, wading in waterways, working from a boat, and working in and around traffic.

  • Willingness to travel within PA, NJ, DE, and MD.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong work ethic and ability to work on multiple projects and ability to meet multiple deadlines

  • Home office location preferred to be in closer proximity to inspection work

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Word.

STV currently has an opening in either our Douglassville, Philadelphia or Harrisburg PA offices for a Bridge Inspection Group Leader in our Transportation and Infrastructure division. Successful candidate will be a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of bridge engineering industry practices and capable of solving a wide range of bridge engineering design, analysis and inspection challenges. Using demonstrated progressively sophisticated experience, you will apply it to bridge engineering methods and technologies for a wide range of projects. In addition, you will also have experience using independent judgment managing technical staff with day-to-day project work, producing technical deliverables for bridges and other structures associated with transportation engineering projects. Experience with alternative delivery methods such as design/build and accelerated bridge construction is also desirable.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leading our bridge inspection practice and team

  • Completing engineering design, analysis and executing technical decisions to achieve successful high-quality project delivery for complex and non-complex highway bridge replacements, rehabilitations and preservations.

  • Supporting the Pennsylvania Business Manager in the pursuit of new work with marketing and proposal development.

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (MS Degree is a plus)

  • A minimum of 11 years of experience.

  • Pennsylvania Professional Engineering License

  • Experience with bridge engineering design and analysis software including Microstation and standard Microsoft Office Suite of products are required.

  • Certified Bridge Safety Inspection (CBSI) Certification,

  • PennDOT experience and project management training are preferred.

  • Good oral and written communication skills are essential.
