Pickering, Corts, Summerson, Inc. - Bridge Inspection Team Leader / Transportation Design Project Engineer

Pickering, Corts & Summerson, Inc., an award winning, multi-disciplinary engineering/design firm has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic self-starter to join our company as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader / Transportation Design Project Engineer.

This is a mid to senior level position for an individual with extensive experience in inspecting bridges and transportation design. Bridge or Highway design experience with developing plans from preliminary engineering to final design. Bridge inspection experience to determine structural soundness and compliance with NBIS, and other local, state and federal regulations is preferred.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

· Responsible to plan inspections and lead inspection teams.

· Inspect bridges as required for structural integrity, general safety and continued conformance to specifications and codes.

· Provide mentoring to Junior Bridge Inspectors and Junior Design Staff.

· Prepare load rating calculations for bridges based on Load Factor and Load Resistance Factor Methodologies using various DOT and Commercial Software Packages.

· Prepare (design) temporary and permanent repair schemes for critical deficiencies identified during inspections.

· Bridge or highway design experience includes but not limited to utilizing PennDOT bridge design apps or Finite Element apps or MicroStation Open Roads for roadway layout and modeling.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Experience working with PennDOT preferred; NJDOT experience a plus

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field

  • EIT certification (or ability to obtain such) preferred

  • A desire to work both outside (during all types of weather) and in the office.

  • The ability to navigate in and around bridge structures and may require climbing, wading in the waterways, working from a boat, and working in and around traffic.

  • Willingness to travel within PA

  • Ability to work in a team environment to reach mutual goals

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft apps

  • Experience with MicroStation applications, including Open Roads and AutoCAD software is a plus

  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license

As a Structures Engineer, you will report to the Structures Group Manager and will be working closely with Structures Designers and Engineers. In order to qualify for this position you must have a P.E. license, over 10 years of experience in professional engineering services, strong attention to detail, experience using PennDOT and structural design/analysis software, and familiarity with common structural design publications and design practices. You also need to be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, strong coordination skills, work in a team environment but able to also work independently and possess supervision skills. Although not required, we would be especially interested if you also have a Certified Bridge Safety Inspector (CBSI) Certification. A typical day might look like leading the structural design of a bridge, retaining wall, or sign structure project; training and supervising less experienced team members; helping to monitor schedules, task budgets, and quality of deliverables; completing design reviews or shop drawing reviews; representing Susquehanna Civil at external meetings; attending internal project meetings; assisting with Statements of Interest, marketing efforts, and development of technical and price proposals; and acting as a technical advisor to other Susquehanna Civil staff.
