Description
STV currently has an opening in our Philadelphia, Douglassville, or Harrisburg office for a Bridge Inspection Team Leader/Structural Engineering Specialist in our Transportation and Infrastructure division. The successful candidate will be an experienced professional with a full understanding of bridge inspection and engineering industry practices and capable of solving a wide range of bridge engineering design, analysis, and inspection challenges.
The position offers a mix of office and field work, from leading a team to perform on-site bridge inspections in various locations, most locally with opportunities nationally, and providing technical oversight and review of inspection reports and load ratings, to preparing design and field oversight of bridge and culvert repairs. Opportunities abound in this position for completing engineering design, analysis, inspection, and executing technical decisions to achieve successful high-quality project delivery for complex and non-complex bridge replacements, rehabilitations, and preservations.
Primary Responsibilities:
Plan, perform, and supervise bridge inspections in accordance with NBI Standards and all safety guidelines
Supervise and mentor inspection team members
Assist with bridge design and rehabilitation projects - performing design calculations, estimates, and specifications as well as assist with bridge rating calculations and reports.
Monitoring of project budgets and schedules
Experience performing NBIS inspection of various types of bridges
Completion of FHWA-NHI- 130055 (Safety Inspection of In-service Bridges)
Qualified NBIS team leader for bridge inspections per 23CFR650
Experience with bridge engineering design and analysis software and standard Microsoft Office Suite products
Ability to work independently
Record of safe working habits
Physical ability to perform field work year-round in adverse weather conditions and work around bridges, roads, rail, and tunnels
Physical ability to carry ladders and gear, work at heights, and work in water with waders
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Reliable means of transportation and willingness to travel
Preferred qualifications and skills:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
A minimum of 5 years of bridge inspection
Pennsylvania Professional Engineering License (or ability to apply within 1 yr)

Job Description
Do you have transferable experience for the Senior Structural Engineer position, a positive attitude, and are looking to join a highly collaborative and people-focused company?
The Senior Structural Engineer position is responsible for helping lead the Structural Design Group by monitoring task deliverables, schedules, budgets, and quality; assisting with business development efforts; leading structural designs; and mentoring less experienced team members. The Senior Structural Engineer may also serve as Project Manager.
The Senior Structural Engineer will work collaboratively with Structural Designers, Engineers, and Technicians and will be given the responsibility of managing projects and task deliverables; assisting upper-level management with projects and initiatives; overseeing and developing the Structural Design team; attending events and association meetings; and applying technical knowledge and experience to perform a wide-array of complex design assignments.

Typical Duties:
Help monitor task deliverables (plans, specifications, and estimates), schedules and task budgets and communicate schedule and budget status to Project Managers.
Serve as Project Manager (PM) for specific projects, both bridge-focused, as well as other discipline focused.
Regularly assists upper-level management and staff with Statements-of-Interest, marketing efforts, development of technical and price proposals, or act as a technical advisor.
Supervise, mentor, and train less experienced staff to develop overall group design depth and expertise.
Review other consultants' designs for conformity to design manuals and standards.
Serve as lead Structural Engineer in the completion of structural design tasks and preparations of complete project documents.
Ensure adherence to design standards and criteria.
Provide quality control for structural designs completed by less experienced staff; guide and direct staff to complete all structural design elements (plans, specifications, and estimates) accurately and within budget.
Identify and propose solutions to all complex design issues as they arise.
Review fabricator shop drawings for compliance with contract documents and design standards.
Communicate and coordinate design elements as needed with other discipline task leads and team members or external team members.
Represent Susquehanna Civil at networking events and associations, as well as at larger and more complex external project meetings; develops client relationships as the opportunity arises.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Must-Haves – Skills, Transferable Experience, & Certifications:
Education: Bachelor’s
Professional License: EIT (PE Preferred)
Minimum experience: 10 years
Preferred Skills/Experience:
Strong understanding of all aspects of structural design (concrete and steel bridge design, retaining wall design, culvert design, including knowledge of proprietary design elements suitable for bridge or retaining wall applications). A thorough knowledge of PennDOT Design Manuals and Standards is also required.
Advanced-level knowledge of all fundamental engineering related mathematical disciplines including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
Proficient in using Bentley MicroStation CADD systems and PennDOT computer-based design programs.
Exhibits strong problem-solving skills as a means of ensuring constructability of design projects as well as meeting schedules.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; will be expected to clearly communicate issues through written reports and will be expected to communicate complex issues and topics effectively to a range of audiences. Will be expected to represent Susquehanna Civil at external meetings.
Proven ability to work in a team environment, both within the structures group and with various other groups within the organization. Demonstrates ability to lead, motivate team members, and foster teamwork.
Works independently and possesses excellent time management skills as well as critical thinking skills.
Exhibits self-motivation for meeting schedules and responding to both internal and external clients with limited oversight from supervisor/management.
Demonstrates excellent organizational skills for use in the production of required structural design deliverables.
Possesses excellent judgment regarding structural design decisions.
Must be detail oriented.
Ability to monitor multiple projects as needed for the group regarding schedule and budget. Ability to communicate budget and status of projects to group manager and assist in identifying solutions to project challenges.

HDR Engineering, Inc. (HDR)
HDR is seeking a Bridges and Structures Section Manager in our Mechanicsburg, PA, office to lead and grow our structures team in central Pennsylvania. The Mechanicsburg Section Manager will be responsible for management of structures staff, delivery of project submissions, staff development, project profitability, staff morale, and quality control. They will function as a Project Manager or Project Engineer on large / complex infrastructure projects. They will be involved in business development planning, client management, proposal preparation, and interviews not only in Central PA, but across the state as qualifications and past experience match. The Section Manager will see that all work is planned, organized, controlled, and evaluated through a pro-active project management system, and subsequently implement, monitor, and support company policies. They will also select, train, and develop technical personnel and work cooperatively with Area Leadership, National Directors, and Marketing Leads.
Additional Responsibilities will include:
• Coordinate with our Pittsburgh and Plymouth Meeting Section Managers to balance staff workload, provide/identify staff training opportunities, and identify/pursue business development opportunities
• Lead multi-disciplined transportation design teams as a Project Manager or Project Engineer for local and workshare projects
• Lead technical design for DOT and local agency highway bridges, along with bridge load ratings
• Drive business development efforts within Central PA, including involvement in marketing planning and client management
• Establish client relationships and lead marketing of new and existing clients
• Lead the development and review of proposals, project scopes, schedules, and budgets
• Mentor less-experienced staff, and act as a technical expert in engineering analysis and design with a proven background of technical leadership on these types of projects
• Prepare and review project budgets for the bridge design section and track budget status
• Independently coordinate work of engineers and balance the project delivery team throughout project development
• Conduct analyses, develop design solutions, and prepare design drawings, calculations, and specifications for bridge engineering projects, including checking calculations and designs done by others
• Perform quality control reviews of bridge design projects
Required Qualifications:
BS degree in Civil Engineering
Minimum of 10 years of bridge/structural design experience
PE in Pennsylvania or ability to obtain within six months of hire
Proven hands-on experience in all aspects of bridge design projects with a focus on PennDOT and Pennsylvania Turnpike projects
Experience using Microstation, LARSA 4D (or similar structural analysis software), and typical structural analysis programs and bridge design software used in the industry
Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the LRFD Bridge Design Code
Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills and ability to work with various teams
Must be comfortable being viewed as a technical expert in engineering analysis and design and have proven background of technical leadership on these types of projects
Must enjoy mentoring and teaching other staff
Must have the ability to handle multiple assignments
